  • Look Inside

Cases of sudden deafness were examined by pure tone audiometry, Bekesy's audiometry, standard speech audiometry, speech audiometry filtered by 1200 cps low pass filter, caloric response test and finally, by observation of positional nystagmus. The difference of vestibular function was described between two types of sudden deafness; the high tone loss (1st type) and the hearing loss in whole range (2nd type). Directional changing positional nystagmus was found in 4 out of 8 cases of 1st type, while 26 cases out of 37 of the 2nd type showed directional nystagmus toward one side. This difference was supposd to be due to quantitative factor of a lesion in the vestibule.

A schematic picture of labyrinth in sudden deafness was also demonstrated comparing these two types.
