Goto and Kinugawa made studies on ciliary movements inherent to the mucous membranes of the nasal cavity and the maxillary sinus to find a possible relation between the two. With 82 patients comprising 164 nares as clinical ma-terial for study zinc oxide powder was insuf-flated into the nasal cavity. And thereafter, every 10 minutes for the period of 30 minutes, the nasal cavity particularly the surface of the septum and the middle and inferior turbinates was inspected for the manner in which the pow-der may be eliminated from these structures. With the maxillary sinus 15% molyodol (iodized oil) was instilled into it and the mode with which this agent to be dispelled was noted. From these observations the authors concluded that the ciliary movements of the nasal mucous membranes do not necessarily coincide with that of the maxillary sinus. And clinically to assume a diagnosis of sinus condition based upon the state in which nasal mucous mem-branes may present themselves appeared to be premature and necessitating a further study on the subject.
