GOTO proposes a new term, Enhanced Hear-ing Radical Mastoidectomy, for a type of opera-tion in which the hearing was ameliorated after the procedure. Seventy two cases are operated by this method with resulting improvement of hearing which was shown by audiogram records.

It was observed that conditions which pre-served hearing after mastoidectamy appeared to be dependent upon preservation of tympanic membrane and patency of the Eustachian tube.

It was also observed that in some cases hearing may be improved when foramen rotund-um of the cochlea be closcd while others be-ing subjected to similar procedure will show no effects thereby; such differences as may occur may also be dependent upon the materi-al with which to effect the closure. By using a sound-probe it was found that cases showing amelioration of hearing by closure of foramen rotundum were the ones in whom sound con-duction through the short process of maleus was good, and, visa versa, cases with no im-provement showed that that conduction appear-ed to be poor. Present method of operation is devised upon experimentation on cats by attempting to amend the facts which led to loss of hearing.
