YOSHIDA says the difficulties which performance of tonsillectomy is sometimes met with are excessive bleeding, aspiration and deglutition of blood with consequent coughing and gagging. In order to overcome these difficulties the author devised a new instrument which he named "Aspirating Dissector".

The instrument is constructed as a hollow-bodied dissector 20 cm in length and which ends at one extremity in a spatulous serrated edge. The center of this edge is provided with an orifice for suction; while the opposite end is made attachable to the rub ber tubing connected to the suction apparatus.

In the course of dissection the orifice provided for suction draws away the blood and affords thereby a clear operative field and the procedure is thus, facilitated.
