Homma investigates the effect of large-volume " spinal-pumping ", i. e., a large volume fluid displacement at each excurssion of piston of the syringe, at the suboccipital region on 36 patients whose hearing defects were that of inner ear type which ranged from hard of hearing to total deafness. Subjective hearing tests are performed by employment of Bezolp-Edelmann's continuous tone method. From the treatment the average increase of hearing on these patients amounted to 18 per cent. In some cases improvement on tone perception covered the entire tonal range in equal proportions ; while in others the effect was limited to middle and lower frequencies. The treatment is most effective toward those cases showing " hill pattern " in the test graphs which are labyrinthine in type and least effective toward those showing signs of vestibular disfun-ction or its complications. It is also found inef-fective toward hearing losses or total deafness which are caused by complications of acute oti-tis media.
