  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We have developed an experimental model of epidural spinal cord compression in rabbits. VX2 tumor cells injected anterior to the Th13 vertebral body grow into the epidural space directly through the intervertebral foramina or distroying the vertebral bodies to compress the spinal cord. The animals developed weakness of the hindlimbs 2 to 3 weeks after inoculation and becamecompletely paraplegic within 2 weeks after the onset of weakness.

The histopathological examination revealed an invasion in the epidural space and vertebral body by the tumor. The compressed spinal cord showed edema and axonal swelling in the white matter.
