I．てんかん

1．はじめに

　てんかんは精神神経疾患の中でとくに頻度の高い疾患であり，その疫学調査は諸外国においても，我が国においても実施されてきたが，まだ不十分であり，最も基本的な疫学的知見である有病率に関しても，なお十分に明らかにされていない現状である。

　てんかんの実態を明らかにするためには，多数人口を対象とした集団人口調査が必要であるが，その実施は困難でありいくつかの問題点がある。すなわち，①てんかんの症状は多様であり，痙攣以外の症状を主徴とするものは把握しにくい，②てんかんと紛らわしい非てんかん性発作現象が多い，③確定診断には脳波所見が欠かせないが，疫学調査では脳波所見を利用しにくい，ことなどである。

Epileptic patients are widely distributed in general population, and its clinical symptomatology is multifarious. This entails many difficulties when undertaking epidemiological studies. Although a number of studies have been attempted so far, no decisive data for the prevalence rate and annual incidence rate, which are the most fundamental findings in epidemiology, have ben obtained.

Epidemiological studies of epilepsy are based on hospital statistics, population analysis and mortality statistics. Population-based study is a most important aspect.
