はじめに

　てんかんの全体像を理解するためには臨床的知見と疫学的知見の総合が必要である。てんかんは多様な病型を有するため，その正確な分類は臨床上きわめて重要であり，各病型がそれぞれ成因，治療，予後などに著しい差異を示すので，疫学的研究にも分類が重視される。

　国際てんかん連盟（ILAE）の「てんかん，てんかん症候群および関連発作性疾患の分類（1989）^1,2）（以下，てんかんの新国際分類と略す）」は，すでに臨床ではかなり普及しており，またこの分類に基づく疫学調査も試みられている。これは国際的な資料の比較にきわめて有効である。

The new international classification of epilepsies, epileptic syndromes and related seizure disorders (ILAE, 1989) is now commonly used in clinical practice. Neuroepidemiological study of epilepsy on the basis of this classification is important for the comprehensive understanding of epilepsies and epileptic syndromes.

From 1990 to 1993, several epidemiological studies on classification of epilepsies and epileptic syn-dromes have been undertaken by use of medical records at hospitals and practitioners' clinics.
