 Rett syndrome (RS) is a disorder with characteristic sets of signs and symptoms occurring only in female. The etiology is unknown.

This disorder was initially described by A. Rett in Vienna in 1966 as "cerebral atrophy associated with hyperammonaemia", whose characteristics consist of " hyperammonaemia, hypomimia or amimia, alalia, stereotyped movement patterns in arms and hands, enhanced reflex activity, spastic increase in tone, gait apraxia, tendency to cerebral convulsive attacks, high grade of mental retardation, gyneco-trophy (only female) and progression of the disease."
