  • Look Inside

Thalamic degeneration (ThD) is a rare disorder of primary neuronal degeneration, that is, successive nerve cell death of unknown cause, mainly affecting the thalamus. The first case of ThD was described by Stern in 193969) and up to date, only 11 of the reported autopsied cases including 3 cases from 2 families are well documented and seem to belong to this category (Table 1).

The age at onset ranges widely from 16 to 72 years (mean: 42.5 years) and both men and women (19: 15 cases) are affected. The familial occurrence is consistent with autosomal dominant transmission33, 34).
