  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Actually, thalamus is a complex nuclear mass. There are considerable numbers of afferents terminating from various brain areas, and efferents arising from thalamic nuclei. For investigating the neurotransmitter system of thalamus, immunohis-tochemistry, some combined with tracing methods such as HRP or autoradiograpy, has currently been considered to be a method of choice. In fact, growing evidences have been accumulating that many classical transmitters as well as trans-mitter candidates may participate in the neural transmission within the thalamic nuclei. At now, neurotransmitter candidates of following system relating to thalamus, have been investigated mostly by immunohistochemistry: 1) hypothalamo-thala-mic projections; 2) septo-thalamic projections; 3) thalamic reticular neurons; 4) interneurons within the thalamus; 5) ascending projection system arising from brain stem; 6) nigro-ventro-medial projection; 7) pallido-thalamic projection; 8) corticothalamic projections. As this shows, the majority of them are afferent systems to thalamus.
