Abstract

It is the iris that changes the size of the pupil. The iris behaves as a diaphragm which retracts or expands depending upon the net result of the contractions of the sphincter and the dilator, two muscles opposing each other in function. It is generally recognized that the sphincter is inner-vated by the parasympathetic nerve via the oculomotor nerve and the dilator by the sympa-thetic nerve via the cervical sympathetic nerve.
