Abstract

Ever since the identification of DNA as the genetic material, a maintaining the stability of DNA has been one of the basic problems to be solved in biology. Although DNA must have been exposed to various damaging agents in the environment such as radiations and chemicals for many years, definite traits of species appear to have persisted and been well conserved. Recent research clearly indicates that the stability of genetic information is mainly due to the capacity of living cells to repair the damages in DNA.
