  • Look Inside

Cortical field potentials preceding self-paced (self-initiated) and reaction-time (visually initiated) hand movements were recorded in monkeys and analysed to study the central nervous mechanism for premovement organization of 'voluntary' movements.

Recording electrodes (silver wire of 0.25 mm diameter and insulated except at their pointed tips) were placed on the surface and at 2.5~3.0 mm depth (sometimes also at 1.0~1.5 mm depth) in each locus of the cortex and fixed to the bone by dental cement. Such electrodes wereimplanted in 10~20 various areas of bilateral hemispheres and used for several months.
