Abstract

Stabilization of retinal images is the first re-quirement for visual perception. It is crucial for freely moving animals to have an ability to move their eyes so as to compensate for body move-ments. This is accomplished by two comple-mentary neural mechanisms, vestibulo-ocular reflex and optokinetic response. Deviation of eye posi-tion resulted from these reflexes, however, must be reset;this is done by fast eye movements called quick phases.
