  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Although it has long been known that stimulation of a portion of primate cerebral cortex rostral to the precentral motor cortex could produce movements of contralateral limbs and face, Penfield and Welch were the first to distinguish a secondary or supplementary motor area (SMA) from the primary motor area. The SMA lies within area 6 of Brodmann and in primates it corresponds largely to the mesial part of area 6 aα of the Vogts.
