Abstract

The rolling mouse Nagoya (RMN) is a mutant mouse characterized by severe gait disturbances. The symptom is suggested to be of cerebellar origin and RMN is regarded as an animal model of human cerebellar degeneration diseases.

A mutant mouse with gait disturbances was found in 1969 by Oda in a course of mating experiments between S III and C57BL/6JNga, and reported in 1973. This mouse was designated as the rolling mouse Nagoya. Genetic studies revealed that abnormalities in RMNs are deter-mined by a single autosomal recessive gene (rol) on the eighth chromosome.
