はじめに

　slow virus infection（以下SVIと略称）という概念が，ヒトの神経疾患に適用されるようになった最初のいきさつは，1957年以降，Gadjusekら^1）を中心とするNIHグループの研究成果といえる。それはニューギニアのFore族に優発する進行性小脳変性症を中核とするKuruを，チンパンジーをはじめとする霊長類に継代的にtransmitでき，さらにその後，ヒトの初老期精神病のカテゴリーに属するCreutzfeldt-Jakob病（以下C-J-Dと略称）についても，同様の成功をおさめた諸業績が，その基盤となっている。しかしこの一見，奇異にもみえる動物実験への発想は，もともとヒツジのScrapieのそれに由来していた。なぜなら，進行性小脳症状と神経性内分泌異常を示すScrapieの脳を，健康なヒツジ脳に移植することによって，後老にも前者同様の疾患を再現させたSigurdssonの業績^2）がそれで，1954年，かれ自身が，すでにSVIの概念を提唱していたからである。
