There are essentially two different types of eye movements and they are controlled by different central nervous system (CNS) structure, different nerve fibers and different muscle fibers. These separate systems may be differentially affected by certain disease states, drugs and central stimulation (Bach-y-Rita).

I. Based on their characteristics of isometric twitch, motor units in many mammalian skeletal muscles can be grouped into fast and slow types.
