The biology of glial cells with special reference to JC virus infection

　ウイルスが特定の神経系細胞にのみ感染するViral affinityに関して，まず細胞膜レセプターを紹介した。しかしレセプターを介したエントリーだけでは細胞特異性は決定されず，細胞内に入ってから後にさまざまの因子によって最終的に決定されているが，それらの因子はまだ不明である。ヒト中枢神経系のoligodendrocyteに感染し，脱髄を生ずるJC virusは幅広い種類の細胞にエントリーするが，最終的にはoligodendrocyteの核内でのみ増殖する。その核内因子もJC Virus regulatory regionを絞ったelectrophoretic mobility shift assay（EMSA）にて対象が狭められてきている。

一方，神経発生学の研究者からo1igodendrocyteの分化と発達に必要な転写因子が次々と同定されてきており，これらの転写因子をJC virusが利用しているかが今後の研究課題である。JC virusの転写に関連するEMSA解析から，ウイルスのみが認識する未知の因子が同定されることが期待される。

In previous studies, membrane receptors for neurotropic viruses have been determined. In most viruses, however, neurotropism and the subsequent cellular tropism are not determined by membrane receptors, but by various unknown intracellular molecules. JC virus infects human oligodendrocyte causing demyelination. The virus has been shown to enter various types of cell, but will proliferate only in the nuclei of oligodendrocytes with, exceptionally, the involvement of a few astrocytes.
