  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A human polyomavirus JC (JCV) was first isolated in 1971 from the diseased brain of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). The narrow host range of JCV had prevented the investigators from isolation of JC virus from PML, but primary human fetal glia (PHFG) is now proved to support JCV replication efficiently.

Further studies revealed that adult brain cell, amnion cell, vascular endothelial cell, embryonic kidney cell and urinary epithelial cell also support JCV replication, though less efficient than PHFG. Recently SVG was established fom PHFG using SV 40 mutant and was shown to be a good cell line for JC virus replication.
