  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The large majority of cells in the nervous system are glial cells, including astrocyte, oligodendrocyte, and microglia. Astrocytes provide growth factors that stimulate proliferation, migration and survival of neurons and their precursors, and guide axonal growth. In the central nervous system (CNS) oligodendrocyte form myelin sheaths around axons, and control the distribution of channel proteins on the axonal surface. Microglias play a role in clearance of apoptotic neurons and glia from the CNS, and more over they have been shown to regulate neurotransmitter release.
