Functions of glutamate receptors studied with the knock out mice

グルタミン酸は，脊椎動物中枢神経系の主要な興奮性伝達物質であり，その受容体には多くのサブタイプがある。グルタミン酸受容体の多様性は，中枢神経系内シナプス伝達の多様な機能に対応していると考えられる。近年，各グルタミン酸受容体サブタイプを欠損させたミュータントマウス（ノックアウトマウス）が標的遺伝子破壊法により作製され，各受容体サブタイプのシナプス伝達における役割，およびそのシナプス機能が個体の行動制御において果たす役割，を解析するのための実験材料として多用されるようになり，興味深い結果が報告されている。

Glutamate is the major excitatory synaptic transmitter in the vertebrate central nervous system. There are two types of glutamate receptors. One is the ionotropic receptors which possesses ion channel and is engaged in the fast synaptic transmission. The other is the metabotropic receptors which is coupled with G protein. There are numbers of subtypes both in the ionotropic and the metabotropic receptors. This diversity of glutamate receptors seems to correspond to the various synaptic functions in the central nervous system.
