  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The autonomic nervous system comprises two major divisions, sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Parasympathetic preganglionic neurons arise in the brain stem, eg. Edinger-Westphal nucleus, the dorsomedial nucleus of the vagus and in the intermediolateral column of the sacral spinal cord, while sympathetic division has neurons originating in the intermediolateral column of the spinal cord. Sympathetic and parasympatheticsystems consist of two different neurons in their pathways having ganglionic synapses located outside the central nervous system.
