There are several distint mechanisms of neuronal cell death that occurs during development. Nuclear type of cell death involves cell shrinkage and chromatin condensation both typical of apoptosis. Superior cervical ganglion (SCG) cells undergoing apoptosis when deprived of NGF have been extensively used as an in vitro model. In this short review we will be focusing on possible roles of internal calcium in neuronal apoptosis of these neurons.
