  • Look Inside

Astrocytes in the central nervous system have long been thought to be involved in the regulation of critical neuronal behavior both during development and in the mature organism. We have shown direct evidence that cultured mouse astrocytes synthesize and secrete a molecule identical to nerve growth factor of the mouse submaxillary glands in several criteria. Using this culture system, regulatory mechanisms, which may be involved in NGF synthesis in the brain, were investigated.

We have found that NGF synthesis by astrocytes cultured from mouse or rat brain are regulated in a growth phase-dependent manner, but not phase-specific in the cell cycle. The events which switch on or off NGF synthesis are thought to be included in the transitional process of the quiescent phase G0 to G1 phase in the cell cycle or vice versa.
