はじめに

　神経細胞が分化，成長し正常に機能し続けるためには，神経栄養因子とよばれるある特定の因子が必要であることが明らかになってきた^23,64）。多くは実体が不明であるが，培養神経細胞に対し，1）分化誘導作用，2）神経突起の発芽，伸長促進，3）生存維持作用，などの生物活性によって存在が確認されている。生体内では神経細胞の多様性，分化発生段階の違いに対応し，複数個の神経栄養因子が定められたプログラムにのっとって合成され機能していると考えられる。

　神経成長因子（nerve growth factor：NGF）は化学構造，遺伝子構造が明らかな唯一の神経栄養因子である。本稿では自律神経系の発達，機能維持，再生にNGFがどのように関わっているか最近の知見を中心に述べてみたい。

Nerve growth factor (NGF) is the only neurotrophic factor with a fully established physiological function, at least in the peripheral nervous system. This is due to the fact that a large amount of NGF is fortunately contained in some exocrine organs such as mouse submaxillary gland and guinea pig proatate gland. NGF is purified from these organs and widely used. However, NGF in these exocrine organs is not relevant for the development and maintenance of NGF-sensitive nervous systems.
