BSEの診断

Diagnosis of BSE（bovine spongiform encephalopathy）

　BSEの診断は，ウシの脳組織について病原体とみなされる異常プリオン蛋白の検出に依存している。現在，食肉処理場での迅速診断と確認試験はいずれもプリオン抗体を利用した免疫生化学検査，または免疫組織化学検査で行われる。農場のウシについての診断では，脳の自己融解の問題が存在する。一方，マウスの脳内への接種により感染性を検出するマウス・バイオアッセイは，研究手段としてのみ用いられ，実用的なものにはなっていない。より高感度の検査法および生前診断の方法の開発の現状も併せて紹介した。

　Diagnosis of BSE is dependent on the detection in the brain of abnormal prion protein that is considered to be causative agent. For rapid test and confirmation on cattle in abbatoir, immunobiochemical and immunohistochemical examinations using anti-prion protein antibody are employed. In testing fallen stock in the farm, autolysis of brain sample has to be considered. Although mouse bioassay, that is dependent on the detection of infectivity by the intracerebral inoculation into mice, shows higher sensitivity than the above-mentioned tests, it is not practical and can be used only for research purpose. Current progress in developing new tests with higher sensitivity and ante-mortem tests is also described.
