A case of 44-year-old woman with dermatofibroma on the right upper arm was reported, which was removed surgically and examined pathologically. The tumor was finger-tip-sized, spherical, elastic, hard, and with no attachment to the epidermis and underlying structure. The cut surface was grayish-white.
The tumor was composed of two kinds of cells-fibroblastic cells and giant cells. The former were spindle-shaped, and have oval, round or spindle nuclei, with abundant chromatin and 1 or 2 nucleoli by Giemsa stain. Mitotic figures were rarely found. These cells had a intimate rela-tionship with collagen fibers and stained yellow to red by Van Gieson and blue by Azan stain. The spindle-shaped cells grouped in bundle, and they intermingled with each other. Among them there were scattered giant cells with 2 to 10 nuclei, the characteristics of which closely re-sembled the surrounding fibroblastic cells.
There were many fine fibers in the network of rather thick fibers by silver stain. Those fine argyrophilic fibers were black in the area with many cells and brown in the area with few cells.
Although many names have been applied to this disease, the name "dermatofibroma" seems to be the most pertineat.
