  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A 47-year-old woman of von Recklinghausen's disease was reported. It started at the age of 19 years, when she noticed nodules and tumors over the entire body surface after sub-sidence of 10 days' edema and disseminated wheals on the whole integument with burning sensation caused by ingestion of a dryed mackerel. The number of the tumors were almost unchanged and their size were slightly increased in the course of 28 years.

Histologic specimen of the tumors showed wavy or retiform arrangement of bundles of fine fibers. They were faint blue with azan stain and yellowish-red with van Gieson's stain.Argylophilic character of this fibril stained by Gomori's method was rather weak. In some parts of the tumors there were bundles of typical nerve fibers or their degenerated picture accompanied with many mast cells. Non-specific cholinesterase activity was high in the tumors, while it was negative in the surrounding connective tissue.

These findings suggest that these tumors might be derived from ectodermal schwannian cells and be formed by a congenital malformation of the peripheral autonomous nervous system and some factors in addition.
