A 66-year-old woman presented with a large swelling of the parathyroid gland, which produced higher serum levels of intact parathyroid hormone. She was diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism and underwent parathyroidectomy, which was complicated by profound hypocalcemia. Shortly after the hypocalcemia, severe hungry bone syndrome(HBS)followed, presenting as tetany, double vision, and systemic bone pain. Intensive administrations of calcium and vitamin D gradually improved the serum levels of calcium.

HBS is defined as a complication induced by severe hypocalcemia because of rapid mineralization in bone tissues after removal of a parathyroid tumor with hyperparathyroidism. We should always be aware of the occurrence of HBS after the surgery.
