Avellis syndrome(AS)is characterized by ipsilateral paralysis of the soft palate and vocal cords. We report two cases of AS secondary to glossopharyngeal and vagus nerve paralysis caused by different etiologies. Case 1:A 61-year-old man persented with dysphagia. Physical examination revealed left-sided paralysis of the soft palate, vocal cords, and left-sided laryngeal enanthema. We diagnosed the patient with AS caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Case 2:A 74-year-old maln presented with dysphagia. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a low-intensity in the right clivus. Further evaluation revealed multiple bone metastases from prostate carcinoma. We diagnosed the patient with AS caused by skull base metastases from prostate carcinoma.
