It is uncertain how many days we should give prophylactic administration of antibiotics. We investigated the period of prophylactic administration of antibiotics in 20 patients in head-and-neck clean surgery. We compared them in two groups. A group of 8 patients was given cefazolin(CEZ)during 30minutes before the surgical incision. B group of 12 patients was given twice-daily CEZ for 5 days.

No postoperative infection was observed in both groups. There were no statistically significant differences between both groups in the number of WBC,neutrophilic cells, value of C-reactive protein and body temperature on the 1stto 5thpostoperative day.

The results indicated that only one administration of prophylactic antibiotics before the incision may control postoperative infection in the head-and-neck clean surgery.
