  • Look Inside

We surveyed the ocular infections by sending questionnaire to 315 sentinel eye clinics in Japan. Epidemic outbreaks of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) or acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) had been observed in 37.6% of the sentinel clinics during the foregoing 5 years. A contact with regional schools or health centers had been made by 82% of these sentinel clinics during the period of epidemic. As no standardized diagnostic criteria were present for EKC, AHC or pharyngoconjunctival fever, diagnosis was made solely by clinical findings in 62% of the sentinel clinics. Rapid diagnositic kits, such as AdenocloneTM, were in use in only 16.6% of clincis. The findings show the urgent need to introduce rapid diagnostic kit for pathogenic virus into the sentinel clinics.
