We started an international project on the epidemiology of infectious conjunctivitis in 1996. As one of the programs, we analyzed scrapings from 50 patients with acute follicular conjunctivitis. The specimens comprised 20 from Manila, Philippine, and 30 from Madras, India. The scrapings were immediately fixed in ethanol and transported to Japan under room temperature. They were then analyzed by PCR-RFLP method. There were no case of herpesvirus or chlamydia. Adenovirus was detected in 15 samples from Manila (75%) , including Ad3 33%, Ad8 60% and Ad37 7%.
