  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A 60-year-old male developed bilateral acute follicular conjunctivitis. Adenovirus was isolated from the conjunctival swabs by immnochromatography. Subsequent corneal subepithelial opacities almost disappeared 6 months after onset. Upper respiratory tract infection developed 10 months after the primary onset followed by bilateral recurrence of corneal subepithelial infiltrates without signs of viral conjunctivitis. Laboratory studies showed no adenovirus but an increased neutralization antibody titers against adenovirus type 3 and 8. This case illustrates that corneal subepithelial infiltrates may recur as a late complication of adenovirus conjunctivitis through an as yet unknown mechanism.
