  • Look Inside

We measured the neural capacity as determined by high-pass resolution perimetry in 48 eyes of 24 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) or normal-tension glaucoma. These eyes were also evaluated for the thickness of retinal nerve fiber layer (NFL) by means of a confocal scanning laser polarimeter. There was a significant correlation between the interocular differences in neural capacity and those in NFL thickness (n =24, r = 0.47, p= 0.02). A significant correlation was present between the two parameters in eyes with POAG but not in those with normal-tension glaucoma. The findings show the potential differences between POAG and normal-tension glaucoma regarding the relation between NFL thickness on the one hand and the number of functional retinal ganglion cells and nerve fibers on the other.
