  • Abstract

A 26-year-old male had been treated with mas-sive dosis of topical corticosteroid for atopic der-matitis for the past 11 years. Visual acuity was 0.1 right and light perception left. The intraocular pressure (IOP) was elevated, particularly in the left eye.

IOP in the left eye remained around 40 mmHg inspite of treatment. Acute stromal edema developed in the left cornea 30 months after initially seen by us. A large rupture of Descemt's membrane became manifest across the lower cornea 4 months later.

We presumed that the elevated IOP was induced by corticosteroid ointment applied to the eyelids over a prolonged period. Sustained rise in IOP would have led to rupture of Descement's mem-brane in his left eye.
