  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We treated 3 cases of Harada's disease with systemic cyclosporine. All the 3 cases had followed protracted courses ranging from 15 to 18 months after onset of the disease. Further systemic cor-ticosteroid was contraindicated due to obesity, diabetes mellitus or osteoporosis.

During the period of treatment with cyclosporine 4 to 8 mg/kg/day for 8 to 10 months, the uveitis was in a suppressed state as a whole. Topical corticosteroid was needed duming the periods of exacerbation. All the cases manifested side effects of cyclosporine: gastrointestinal disturbances, fatigue, hirsutism and gingival proliferation. Urea nitrogen and creatinine in the blood was moderate-ly elevated in 2 cases. Liver or neurological distur-bances were consistently absent.

Our findings show that cyclosporine can be used as an effective means to replace corticosteroids over a duration of several months. It is not certain if the drug can be used for longer periods without severe adverse effects and if it will induce lasting remission in protracted uveitis of Harada's disease.
