We correlated the subjective with objective method of slitlamp biomicroscopic evaluation of cells and flare in the anterior chamber based on 603 readings in 145 eyes with uveitis. We used a flare cell meter which gives quantitated values for cells and flare in the aqueous.

We found a significant correlation between sub-jective and objective readings of aqueous flare (r= 0.73). Subjective reading was associated with large deviations among independent observers and poor reproducibility. A higher threshold was another inherent drawback of subjective evaluation, as eyes were assigned as grade zero if the protein concen-tration in the aqueous was pathologically elevated but was less than thrice the normal value.

Quantitated cell counting by the flare cell meter was less reliable than the subjective evaluation, particularly in mild cases because of poor re-producibility.
