  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Systemic potassium is routinely supplemented during treatment with carbonic anhydrase inhibitors to prevent hypokalemia. To verify the feasibility of this procedure, we discontinued potassium in 38 glaucoma patients who had been thus treated on a longterm basis. Their ages averaged 55.7 ± 16.8 years. Serum potassium level averaged 4.00 ± 0.31 mmol/1 before and 4.00 ± 0.35 mmol/1 2 months after discontinuation of potassium. The difference was not significant. Withdrawal of potassium supplementation thus did not affect the serum potassium level in patients undergoing longterm treatment with carbonic anhydrase inhibitor.
