In the removal of orbital tumors, the surgeon must choose an appropriate approach to reach the tumors and avoid damage to the adjacent normal tissues. For this purpose, we reconstructed three-dimensional imaged models using two-dimensional images obtained by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 5 cases of orbital tumor. We used commercially available programs for personal computers. The obtained models showed the whole view of the orbital region, which helped in understanding the three-dimensional relationships of the tumors and the surrounding structures. These images also presented evidences in deciding the approaches to the tumors. Our three-dimensional imaged models were thus useful in the planning of surgery. While our models were of lesser quality in image and accuracy than those obtained by helical CT or super computer including Advantage Windows, they served as a useful supporting system in the surgery of orbital tumors and promise to be of value for educational purposes.
