  • Look Inside

We reviewed 14 eyes of infectious keratitis following keratoplasty seen during a 5-year period. Thecases comprised 2 groups: suture abscess 8 eyes and suture -nonrelated infection 6 eyes. Cases in the formertype developed abscess at varying periods after surgery. Cases in the latter tended to develop infection eithersoon after surgery or following graft failure. In either group, multiple factors were involved in corneal infection, including loose or torn suture material, contact lens wear, irregular corneal surface and use of topical corticosteroid.Causative organism could be identified in 12 eyes: Staphylococcus aureus 6 eyes including MRSA 3 eyes, Candidaalbicans 2 eyes, Corynebacterium 2 eyes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa 2 eyes. Chemotherapy was effective in11 eyes. The remaining 3 eyes needed additional surgery including re-grafting. The finding shows that postoper-tive corneal infection is a major complication of keratoplasty needing a close follow up for longer periods.
