  • Look Inside

We reviewed 633 cases which underwent eye surgery under general anesthesia during the past 10 years.General anesthesia was necessitated in 455 patients (71.9%) by circumstances of the patient including age, mental state, and history of allergy. Out of the 633 cases in the series, 395 (62.4%) were aged 14 years or less and 73 (11.5%) werecases undergoing emergency surgery. Strabismus was the most frequent cause of surgery in 205 cases (32.4%). Systemicproblems were present at the time of surgery in 207 cases (32.7%) , including minor risks for general anesthesia. Thefindings show that general anesthesia had to be performed because of circumstances of the patient rather than the actualcausative disease or type of surgery.
