  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We performed vitreous surgery on 18 eyes of proliferative diabetic retinopathy and 6 eyes of branch retinal vein occlusion. All the 24 eyes had vitreous hemorrhage. We quantitated the concentration of leptin in the vitreous and the circulating blood. Another series of 22 eyes of macular hole or epiretinal membrane served as control. The intravitreal concentration of leptin averaged 1,162±291pg/ml in diabetic eyes and 528±124pg/ml in retinal vein occlusion. These values were significantly higher than 90±29pg/ml in controls. There was no significant difference between diabetic eyes and retinal vein occlusion. There were no significant differences in leptin concentration in the blood among the three groups. The findings show that intravitreal leptin concentration is elevated in eyes of proliferative diabetic retinopathy and 6 eyes of branch retinal vein occlusion associated with vitreous hemorrhage. It appears that leptin is involved, either directly or indirectly,in intraocular angiogenesis.
