  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

During cataract surgery, a nurse in the surgical theater detected a black particle in the bottle of irrigating solution BSS PLUSTM. Investigations by the manufacturer showd the particle to be an instance of coring, or a piece of rubber stopper of the bottle which fell of during insertion of a needle. The incidence of coring is about 0.01% according to the report of the munufacturer. In order to avoid coring, we advocate inserting the needle to the center of the rubber stopper without screwing motion or reinsertion. We also advocate use of an adequate filter and close observation of the irrigating solution in the bottle.
