Purpose : To evaluate the effect of vitrectomy with peeling of internal limiting membrane (ILM) for macular edema.

Cases : Surgery was performed for macular edema in 14 eyes of diabetic retinopathy and 5 eyes of uveitis.

Results : Surgery induced resolution of macular edema in 6 eyes (43%) of diabetic retinopathy and in one eye (20%) of uveitis. In eyes with diabetic retinopathy, 8 eyes (57%) showed increase of visual acuity of two lines or more, 2 eyes showed no change, and 4 eyes (29%) showed decreased visual acuity. In uveitis eyes, 4 eyes (80%) showed improved visual acuity and one eye showed decreased visual acuity.

Conclusions : Vitrectomy with ILM peeling induced similar rates of improved visual acuity in diabetic retinopathy and uveitis. The procedure was more effective in resolution of macular edema in diabetic retinopathy than in uveitis, probably due to difference in the etiology in both diseases.
