  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Sairei-to (TJ 114) has been claimed to relieve edema in Chinese medicine. It was given to 22 patients of branch retinal vein occlusion with macular edema at the daily dosis of 9 g/day 3.i.d. Another group of 29 patients with branch retinal vein occlusion with macular edema served as control. After one year, the visual acuity improved in 77% of cases in the treated group and deteriorated in none. In the control group, the visual acuity improved in 55% of cases and deteriorated in 21%. Macular edema improved in 96% and remained unchanged in 4% in the treated group. It improved in 76%, remained unchanged in 17% and deteriorated in 7% in the control group. The findings seemed to show the usefulness of sairei-to for branch retinal vein occlusion with macular edema, particularly in cases who fail to respond to other therapeutic modalities including photocoagulation.
