  • Look Inside

We reviewed 16 eyes of 16 female patients who underwent surgery for idiopathic macular hole. Peeling of internal limiting membrane (ILM) was performed in 8 eyes and not in 8 eyes. The visual acuity improved in all the 8 eyes in the former group and in 2 eyes in the latter. The central retinal sensitivity was evaluated using Program 30-2 of Humphrey perimeter. In eyes treated by ILM peeling, it improved in 2 eyes, remained unchanged in 4 and decreased in 2. In eyes without ILM peeling, it remained unchanged in 6 eyes and decreased in 2. The lack of difference between the two groups seemed to show that potential mechanical damage to the retina during ILM peeling does not induce decreased visual acuity or central retinal sensitivity.
