Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of intravitreal injection of bevacizumab for macular edema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion. Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 43 eyes of 43 patients with branch retinal vein occlusion and macular edema. The series comprised 21 males and 22 females. The age ranged from 42 to 85 years, average 66 years. Vitrectomy had been performed in 10 eyes, photocoagulation in 6 eyes, and subtenon injection of triamcinolone in 5 eyes. Each eye received intravitreal injection of 1.0mg bevacizumab. Visual acuity was evaluated in terms of logMAR. Change of visual acuity by 0.2 or more was judged as improvement or deterioration. Results:Visual acuity improved in 19 eyes(44%)one month and in 23 eyes(53%)3 months after treatment. The difference was significant(p<0.05). Macular thickness decreased by 20% or more in 29 eyes. There was no recurrence of macular edema in 10 eyes(23%). Conclusion:Intravitreal injection of bevacizumab resulted in permanent cure of macular edema in 23% of cases. Additional treatment, including photocoagulation, was necessary in the other cases.
